Ghosts of Independence Days Past

I thought it would be interesting to look back at the photos from the past few Fourth of July holidays.

Have a great holiday everyone. Enjoy your friends, your family, and your freedom.

I've Been Busy

So, I haven't been here very much lately. That's going to continue to be the case for the next few weeks, I think.

Shout out to Family Fun magazine. Jessica Seinfeld had that book that gave recipes for fun foods that you hide vegatables in so that they're really healthy. Family Fun had the idea for Corn-On-The-Cob Cupcakes and I ran with it. Fun food that only LOOKS like it might be a vegetable.

Hello, Mom!!!

Today is a day that shall be marked! My mother, Luddite that she is, went to the library, got on the internet, and READ THIS BLOG! No freakin' way! I cannot tell you what a trooper she is do do this--she had to go to the library twice. Yesterday the person who helped her kept entering the web address in the search field. Duh. Welcome to my blog, Mama!

Here's my T8ertot story for the day...

Me: I SAID STOP BANGING THAT DOOR.

Him: Bang, bang, slam, bang.

Me: Come here right now.

He shuffles into the kitchen, head bowed.

Me: I'm not telling you again. I've told you 15 times. If you bang the door again I am going to punish you.

Him: (Panting, grimacing, mouth flexing as he searches for words..) MOM, YOU ARE REALLY PALE!!

Me: SO? What does that matter? We're talking about you banging that door.

Him: I don't know but YOU ARE REALLY PALE. (Turns on his heel and leaves the room)

I guess I'd better hit the pool since my authority seems to be reduced when my melanin is not stirred up.

Taggy Blanket

My friend JerseyBaby (which still cracks me up because she is so NOT what I think of as "jersey"!) tagged me. I feel so cool--but I'm clearly the dork in school who just got asked to the prom and I shouldn't get too excited. And its not like I can follow the rules and tag 6 other bloggers because she knows all the people I know with blogs anyway! Here goes...

1. What were you doing ten years ago?
It was our third summer in our townhouse, my third year working in the clinical laboratory business. I think I was compliance director by then, but this isn't a resume so don't hold me to it. The big event in our lives that year was a vacation we took in November. We hadn't been on a "real" vacation in a few years so we splurged and went to the Westin St. John in the US Virgin Islands for a week. Two days into it we learned that we were in the path of a category 4-5 hurricane named "Lenny". We spent 4 days of the trip in our hotel room. 3 days under government curfew. A man in a rainsuit and a motorcycle helmet delivered cheese sandwiches to our room. We read the first Harry Potter novel, watched alot of TV and movies, and generally laughed about the predicament. Actually, although at the time I felt deprived of my week on the beach, it was quite an interesting experience. I learned when I returned to work that the big topic of the daily management team meeting was a robust discussion of whether or not my husband would survive that much time alone with me. Funny. Ha ha.

2. What are five things on your to-do list today?
a. Get rid of my headache. Had one yesterday, too. What's up with that?
b. Start to move stuff from the basement to the garage for a yard sale I plan on having
c. Scooba the kitchen
d. Clean out the cubbies in the kitchen desk. Things may actually be sprouting in there!
e. Watch the U.S. Open final round with my boys

3. Snacks you enjoy?
Generally, anything bad for me. Today its fresh California cherries and a handful of Good and Plenty left over from the movies last night. Saw the new Indiana Jones and we liked it.

4. Places you've lived?
Leonia, NJ until I was a three year-old. I remember the house pretty well. I remember waking up on the dining room chairs that my mom would line up next to my "big girl bed" after she moved me from my crib. I remember the next door neighbor's house where I played Slinky on their stairs and chased their white cat Snowball around. I remember the other next door neighbors who were two older ladies who use to leave pairs of "dress up" shoes out on their steps for me to play in. I remember my mom in the kitchen early in the morning (like 3 am) trying to help my dad get ready to go to work and seeing if he'd fit in his wetsuit ( I guess he had to get in the water that day for some reason) and not being able to zip it up. I think there was profanity involved. :)

Beachwood, NJ until I was a 22 year old. Great place to grow up near the beach and two fun cities. Our house was small compared to what people expect today, but it never seemed that way to me.

Washington DC for one year-1989/90. Interesting year. Awesome apartment with 12-16 foot ceilings on 16th and U. Fire department next door which meant many interrupted nights of sleep, but its not like sleep was my priority then--fun was. I call it my "Will & Grace" year for reasons that should be obvious to those of you who know the story or knew my roommate.

Various towns in Northern VA-All since meeting and marrying my husband.

5. What are 5 things you would do if you were a billionaire?
Have more kids, exercise more regularly, have a chiropractor/masseur on my payroll, do something (anything) for abused and neglected women and their children, spend more time with my husband in between all the golf I'd be paying for.

5 Years and 50 Thousand Dollars

Its taken that long and cost that much, but our peanut graduated from pre-school today.

He almost had a nervous breakdown with concern that we'd be late, but we weren't.

I guess he knows us pretty well. Watch the video dated June 13th here. Hysterical.

Dentition Alert

Connor has two loose teeth. I can't believe it. He can't believe it. He is so excited as this is clearly recognized by him to be a "rite of passage" into "big-kid". He's been telling me that his teeth hurt for a week, but we just figured it out yesterday. He's spending alot of time in front of the magnifying make-up mirror in my bathroom watching them wiggle about. There is alot of drool in the area.

Last night we went to Wegmans and ended up in the check out line behind a 6 year-old in a tae kwon do uniform. He and Connor struck up a vigorous conversation about their ages, martial arts skills, and finally, teeth--specifically the loose kind. The other boy-Aidan, was quick to inform us that he had many "big teeth" and indeed his mouth was an amalgam of baby teeth and adult teeth in that "so ugly its cute" configuration. Connor demonstrated his minor tooth wiggle several times. Then, suddenly, Aidan says "I have a really loose one up here" and points out a dodgy one on the top next to his central incisors. Connor then asks him what it feels like when they fall out and Aidan reaches in and yanks the tooth out to show Connor what will happen. Blood. Tooth. Hysterical laughter. Unmitigated BOY JOY in the check out line. Aidan's mom was a good sport, but she clearly could not believe that her son had just reached into is his mouth and yanked out a tooth that was not really ready to be set free just to show it off to another kid.

The whole thing just made Connor's night. And mine, too.

Our First Family Camping Trip

Things We Didn't Like

  1. The Heat-This was the hottest weekend of the year so far. Wouldn't you know it? Saturday was 97 degrees.

  2. The Muddy Shower Floor-Overall, the bathrooms were pretty neat, but Saturday night it was a swamp in there. Mud everywhere. Gross.

  3. The Thing Walking Around Our Tent In the Middle of The Night-Whatever it was on Friday night--thanks. You totally freaked me out you little racooon, squirrel, deer, or psycho serial killer. My heart nearly beat out of my chest but I know I scared you when I turned on my Eddie Bauer micro headlamp! Coward!

  4. The Cleanup-Yeah, its all exciting packing to get there and set up your camp, but breaking it down is just a major PITA.

  5. Tangled fishing line

Things We Loved

  1. The Turtle-The boys found him crossing the road. He was a nice little guy and became our camp mascot. He had a great menu for a day---bananas and grapes. He lived in one of our baskets and stopped being scared about an hour into it. He was a feisty little guy. We hope he's made it back up that hill....

  2. The Pool-Again, 97 degrees. Pool=Good.

  3. The Woods-Fun to explore and nothing too scary.

  4. Time With Friends-We all liked being with our friends, adults and children alike.

  5. How Close It Was-http://www.campluray.com/

  6. S'mores and Hot Dogs

  7. Fishing and chopping up night crawlers for bait

  8. Electricity--man, do we LOVE electricity.
